4yo Jack’s Brain Surgery

Donation protected
Sleigh bells have turned to alarm bells for my sister Elizabeth’s family this year. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. Her son Jack received a shocking diagnosis, and very badly needs a delicate, medically-staffed flight, all the way from Hawaii to Boston Children’s Hospital where he will begin the journey to get his life back on track.

This past Thursday, after two days of flu-like symptoms, Jack was taken to a small ER on Kauai. After seeing Jack, the doctor referred them to the main Kauai hospital for an MRI where it was discovered that Jack has a mass in his brain. He was airlifted Thursday night to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu where he is currently undergoing extensive diagnostic testing including additional MRIs, MRA, and an Angiogram, all of which require general anesthesia.

The neurosurgeon has not been able to determine a definitive diagnosis, but suspects an AVM or Cavernoma vascular lesion. In the meantime, the little guy has been on steroids to reduce the swelling in his brain, but he’s still having terrible headaches, vertigo, and has been unable to walk as the mass is in his cerebellum (the part of the brain responsible for balance, coordination, and depth perception). Airlifting Jack to Boston is the next step in getting him the highest quality care.

Jack is a 4-year-old, sweet, spirited, sensitive and smart child. As you can probably imagine, his parents, Elizabeth Kreitzer and Ron Varr, are highly anxious and their whole world has completely turned on its head. Jack has a baby sister, Isla, and all they want in this moment is to be together to help Jack through this crisis. Jack has been brave, but also understandably shocked and scared. His physical and mental state have quickly deteriorated while awaiting an action plan that will be the safest course of action. He just wants to be home! However due to a lack of appropriate medical care available to them in Hawaii, he is set to be moved for a 4th time. Brain surgery is in Jack’s immediate future.

Jack and his family are blessed with the most comprehensive health insurance available, as well as understanding employers and neighbors, all providing the best support they can. But it appears MUCH more will be needed:

The medically-staffed flight was quoted at be $190K. Elizabeth and Ron are fighting for insurance coverage.
Flights, accommodations, and life expenses for the family of 4.
Aftercare and follow up treatment for Jack, in a land far away from home.

We ask that if you are willing and able to spare any amount to assist in the many associated costs of this ordeal, you find it in your heart to donate. Of course we understand that the holidays can put a strain on everyone, this is some crazy timing. Please know that any donation with help ease the immense burden suddenly thrown at the Varr family. Perhaps you have one more gift in you to give this year?

Much love, big Mahalo & Aloha from Jack and his family.
