Jack’s Assessment Costs

Hi! First of all, thank you for taking the time to get to this point!

My name is Kamryn and my husband is Alex. We have Jack, our 2 1/2 year old and Kade, our 8 month old.

Let’s just get straight into it! Jack is needing to have an Autism Assessment done. The waitlist for the government funded assessment is 2 years plus. But we are at a point in our process and lives that he needs to be assessed asap. Which means we need to have him assessed privately, which comes at a cost. This is for many reasons but mostly to do with his behaviour and overall quality of life for him and everyone around him. We want to be able to provide Jack with all of the tools that would be necessary for him to be able to thrive in all things he does. The first step to being able to provide that for him is to have him assessed.

There are multiple steps when it comes to getting him assessed for autism, which also means multiple costs when done privately. Canada has a free healthcare system, which is great. But this also means that the waitlists for everything is extremely long. Unfortunately after battling with many things over the past year in regard to Jack, this is our last resort. We would love to be able to wait until we are able to have him assessed publicly (funded by the government) but this is just sadly not possible for us anymore.

Our first step is getting him in to see a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). We need an assessment from them before anything. This costs minimum $800 alone, which is what we were quoted. A Private Autism Assessment costs minimum $3250 for a child under 6, this is what we have been quoted by a few places. There is a large chance we will need to travel in order to get this assessment done as soon as we can, which is why I have placed our goal a little bit higher than $4,050.
