Our son, Jack Massey, who is a student at the Univeristy of Florida, majoring in Geology had an accident on Friday, March 17, 2017 that changed the trajectory of his life forever. Jack suffered a severe spinal cord injury as the result of a shallow pool incident. Thanks to the efforts of his friend, George, who rescued him from drowning, Jack is alive and moving forward as he recovers and looks to the future.
Thanks to nuerosurgeon Dr. Seth Oliviera, and the nurses and physical therapists in the neuroscience intensive care unit at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL, Jack was successfully transferred to the world renowned Shepherds Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta on March 24th.
Words cannot express the gratitude for the access Jack has had and will have to the best-of-the-best in medical care.
To say that Jack has been brave is no understatement. He endured every painful and grueling physical therapy session with grit and determination and without one word of complaint or a tear shed. While those sessions would have left the rest of us mere mortals in shambles, Jack persisted in a way that we will always remember and be inspired by for a long time to come. We keep reminding him that tears are okay. And perhaps they will come in time as the road to recovery is long and will be filled with peaks and valleys. For now, know that Jack is facing this with a realistic and positive mindset. He will prevail and live life with the best possible outcome.
At this point he has mobility in his arms, and can grasp utensils that have a thick grip. He has feeling from mid chest and up. He still needs assistance with eating.
As you are aware, not all expenses are covered by health insurance . This is an unintended tragic event in our family, affecting every aspect of our lives.
In order to decrease the financial burdens that will confront us, we invite you to contribute any amount feasible. We humbly bow down to you and your generousity and THANK YOU with all of our hearts.
Peace and love to all of you. The bonds of affection that we all share with one another are the greatest gift we can give.
God bless
- The Massey Family
