On May 23rd Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon was contacted about taking in Jackie, a self mutilating cockatoo. The situation was desperate. The bird's primary caretaker, the family matriarch, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly. The family could no longer provide adequate care for Jackie. Jackie was placed into foster care on Saturday June 4th.
Jackie is a 22 year old Moluccan cockatoo. She currently has a quarter sized open wound on her chest. According to the family, she has had issues with plucking for 18 years. At some point, the plucking turned into self mutilation.
For the past 7 years, she has worn a plastic collar around her neck to deter her from picking. The collar is screwed into place around her neck. This particular piece of plastic has been on her for several years. She has learned to get around the collar and has been chewing on her chest.
We are raising money to help Jackie. Helping Jackie will not be a quick or easy process and it will likely be expensive. She is scheduled to see the vet on June 12th. We will have a better idea of what recovery entails after the doctor takes a look at her.
Jackie is a very gentle bird! Even with all the stress of moving to a new home, Jackie seeks out head scratches, kind words and lovin'. She has a sweet voice and says "Helllloooo!" whenever we enter her room.

Exotic Bird Rescue of Oregon was founded in December 1994 due to a local parrot aviary neglect situation. The mission of EBR is to provide a safe haven for birds in need and to seek proper placement of them through a variety of proven rescue models.
