Jack Whalen 2023 Boston Marathon
To honor Boston Police Sergeant, Dennis “DJ”
Simmonds, I am running the 2023 Boston Marathon on April 17, 2023.
My reasons for running in DJ’s honor are twofold; DJ and I both grew up in Randolph, and we have a shared value to uphold and respect those who devote their lives to the service of others.
I feel a connection with everyone else whose life was shaped by their time in Randolph. We sat in the same classrooms and maybe even learned from the same teachers.
I feel a profound sadness and honor for the sacrifice DJ made in the line of duty and feel privileged to run the Boston Marathon as a tribute to him and the Simmonds family.
To continue DJ’s mission, I am raising funds for the Dennis “DJ” Simmonds Unsung Hero Foundation. This nonprofit was founded by DJ’s sister, Nicole, to support young people with a shared lived experience with DJ. From providing Randolph students with academic scholarships to creating access to activities and experiences that will amplify their future. The foundation focuses to align community resources to uphold the strength, reputation, and legacy of DJ’s hometown of Randolph, MA.
