Jack is a senior at the University of Iowa studying business. He had just moved back to school mid-August when he started experiencing some concerning symptoms that lead him to an urgent care clinic in Iowa City. An X-ray was done and a softball size mass was found in his mediastinum (chest). Jack was then admitted to the Iowa City Hospital where subsequent scans found concern for malignancy and metastasis to his lymph nodes.
His care was transferred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester where a lymph node biopsy found he had a rare form of metastatic extragonadal germ cell cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes. He was scheduled to start chemotherapy at Mayo on Monday, September 18th, but he recently started having some complications from the tumor causing SVC syndrome which caused his neck and face to swell. This also caused a blood clot and he's having difficulty swallowing. He's currently in the ICU where they plan to insert a stent to resolve the SVC symptoms. They plan to start chemotherapy as soon as possible to shrink the size of the tumor to relieve the pressure on his arteries.
As you know, the medical and day to day travel and living costs associated with Jack's diagnosis and treatment will be significant. We've created this GoFundMe campaign with the hope of alleviating some of the financial burden that comes with Jack's treatment. Please give what you can, and please share with others. Every dollar helps, and please pray for Jack's successful treatment and recovery.
