Hello I am wrighting this on behalf of my parents John and Maryanne Healy. Last friday a controlled burn conducted by the state was rekindled and became out of control as a storm with high winds blew over the Sierras.
My dad is a 30+ year volunteer fireman and heard the scanner go off at 2:30 am and lept into action. He drove to the volunteer firehouse and toned out a brush truck and began driving all around the neighborhood waking everyone up and telling them to evacuate. During this time he had my mom round up the horses in an attempt to keep them out of harms way... He called me at 5am and asked that I come help my mom. I drove as fast as I could and navigated through law enforcment barricades to help mom but by then all I could do was get the dogs and her out as the fire was already at the back of the houses. I called my dad and explained the situation, he drove up from putting out someone elses property and attempted to stop the fire. He fought it with no help from any other agency for 2 hours. He almost lost his life and the sheriffs almost had to detain him... After he left the scene the rest of the ranch burned before he returned with more water. Cars, trucks, travel trailer and most of the tractors he relies on burned.
My parents lost everything, they are ages 70 and 75, retired and without income or a house(s) including their small rental house that they relied on for income. They have served our community since 1975 when we moved to Nevada. I have spoken with many of the neighbors and they have expressed their thanks for my dad saving their lives.. They all cried and thanked us.
The insurance companys are offering lower than expected settlements and this will not make them even partially whole again. They are very proud and won't ask for help as they are both hard working and too proud!
