Show our good friend and brother Jack some love. He will getting out of rehab this weekend March 1st. A
On the last Saturday of January, Jack was close to completing another cruise on his Harley after a loop around the Olympic Peninsula, heading back to home through Belfair, when an inebriated/stoned driver ran a stop sign and slammed full speed into Jack and his bike - more here - https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/2025/01/27/belfair-crash-suspected-as-dui-sends-motorcyclist-to-seattle-hospital/77973213007/
The truck nailed Jack broadside as he was heading north up the hill from Belfair near McDonald's, crushing his right leg and severing his foot. Thrown from his ride, he landed on his left knee which broke into four pieces. He laid on the cold ground, his life's blood pouring out from his femoral artery onto the road...
Why is that man in the truck trying to kill me? But then his own thoughts, his sense of his imminent mortality, shifted to a greater perspective: he thanked God that he was worthy of this moment, that he was still alive and the tragedy he endured was another reminder of his place in God's creation. Thankfulness to God - the serenity of his soul's sense of mortality - and eternity.
The next minutes and hours were horrific, but he never lost consciousness until after he arrived by helicopter at Harborview in Seattle. He nearly "bled out", and the medical rescue team working to save him shared that his foot was gone, his lower leg mangled beyond repair, and his femur broken in four places. They transfused more blood volume into him than an average human possesses - he was very close to the end...
Jack is slowly recovering - he expects that he will be able to return home next Friday. He's lost his right leg below his knee as you can see in this pic, and his left leg is also damaged at the knee. A long effort to rebuild his strength awaits, perhaps on crutches in a month, then hopefully a prosthesis this year. So many details and issues to resolve - insurance, finances, sustenance and support.
Most of us would curl up in despair, surrender to self pity. Jack stands firm: he gives thanks every day that he has been blessed by God, that this adversity is a reminder of his place in eternity, and that all is well. Someday if I ever grow up I hope to possess the peace and spiritual maturity of my friend Jack....
So, for his many friends I encourage you to connect with Jack, message, check in, call or visit - it's a dark and lonely time waiting to recover, to endure the hardships ahead. If you do I expect, like me, Jack will lift you, provide a perspective that will recenter your own priorities and your place in this world. Jack, as I shared today - I love you and give thanks for your place in my life. Onward!!
