**Update 9/27 -- The Jacintos share updates with PBS News Hour: Some Lahaina Residents Return**
Update 8/15 -- Edith and Vicky share their story: Maui wildfires and Jacinto Families *
Update 8/11 -- thank you, everyone, for your outpouring of love. We raised the goal as we've spoken more to our families, and friends look for ways to contribute.
This is Gayle Sanford and Karen Pruitt, and we are raising relief funds for our family in Lahaina.
Many families in Lahaina, HI, lost their homes to the Hawaiian Wildfires on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Among them are our Auntie Vicky and Uncle Arsenio Jacinto and cousins Jane & Keli'i, Edith, Lorraine, Arthur & Dawn, and Cassie. Thankfully they all safely escaped before their homes were taken.
Their homes are completely leveled, and they only have the personal belongings they could take immediately. My cousin Edith called my mom while she escaped as the house burned.
Auntie Vicky and Uncle Arsenio also have medical equipment destroyed in the fire. My cousins care for them around the clock and are managing their medical conditions at the local fire station during this time while power and communications are still out.
In addition to three homes, the Jacinto's have lost their livelihood for the next days and months while the shock settles and more heartache unfolds in this beloved community.
At least four generations of my family have lived in or grew up in Lahaina, in these Jacinto homes. Our friends who have visited the Jacintos know that Auntie (or Grandma) will always feed you anytime you visit. Come eat! And my cousins would always follow that with more yummy food or a handle of Tito's ... maybe even Peanut Butter Whiskey. No one is left hungry when you visit. Maybe hungover, but not hungry. Their homes were centers of joy, food, and celebrations.
Everything raised here goes to their immediate needs -- food, clothing, medical equipment, transportation. For the long term, we hope to raise enough to contribute to rebuilding their homes, their centers of joy.
Many are in need; please consider giving if you can. Every thought, prayer, or plate lunch counts. You can also contribute to Gayle's Venmo, which will all go directly to the Jacintos: @gaylesanford, or
We love you, Jacintos.
