Hello (Gyebale ko!) My name is Leona. I live in the United States. In 2016, my husband and I made our first mission trip to Uganda Africa. This trip changed our lives forever. We went to Uganda only knowing the missions team we left the United States with. We left two weeks later with friends and family in Uganda.
Now, seven years later, after many trips to Uganda, we have made deeper relationships with our Ugandan family. Through family and friends, we have sponsored several children to enhance their education. One of the young man became a pastor. Another young man became a doctor. We are so proud of both of them.
This year, 2023, we spent a total of twenty-one days in Uganda. It was one of the best trips we have ever made and also the saddest. We have never gone to see the wild animals or to the tourist areas. We go into the islands on Lake Victoria, where the greatest need is.
One day, on the Island of Namiti, our Ugandan son, who is a doctor (Derrick) asked us to pray for a young boy named Morris. He was very sick. After praying for him, I was informed that he needed to be taken to the mainland to be treated at the local hospital. His mom did not have the money to pay for the transportation to take her son to the hospital. My husband and I informed her we would gladly help her with the funds to get transportation. I also asked her to call and let us know if she needed any more funds once at the hospital. She left on the next available boat to the mainland.
The cell phone service is not very good on the islands. It took two days before we were able to make contact with little Morris's mom. She informed us she had been trying to contact us because she needed money, $27.00 US dollars, to purchase the needed medication.
In Uganda, if you do not have money, you do not get treated. If you do not have money, you do not get the medication you need to get better. My heart was so broken. Little Morris died because his mamma did not have twenty-seven dollars! Twenty-seven dollars! My heart is so hurt.
Even before I met Morris, Dr. Derrick was discussing with us about wanting to start a hospital for people in need. He has the heart and compassion of God to accomplish his goal. He wants to ensure that people that need medical attention will receive it and not die like Morris.
I am starting a GoFundMe page to help Dr. Derrick. We know this is a big endeavor. The first part is purchasing the land. If you feel it in your heart, please help.
The name of the hospital will be named after little Morris and the sponsor that assisted Dr. Derrick through his school. Ja Ja Morris Christian Hospital. Ja Ja means grandma/grandpa in Lugandan. I just want to say thank you so much for all that God places on your heart to help.
The picture that you see is little Morris before he was taken to the mainland. Bless you, little Morris.
