JUSTICE FOR ATTICUS:
Atticus is a beautiful, brilliant and jolly 13 year old boy who has Autism. He is a light to his community.
Atticus had his Physical Therapy, ABA Therapy, Adaptive PE, Psychological, Academic and Behavioral supports stripped away from him. As a result, Atticus was sent to a facility that is referred to as “America’s most neglectful school for autism.”
Chicago Public Schools, The Department of Children and Family Services, and Disability Rights New York have all expressed concern over “neglect, abuse and rights violations” regarding his safety. Atticus’ placement at this facility was national news, and became a catalyst for The US Senate to unanimously pass the “Stop Institituional Child Abuse Act.”
Atticus has been attacked by other residents at the facility at least 12 times that we know of. On February 4th, 2025, Atticus reported being struck and injured by a staff member. An incident that the staff member referred to as “restraining” Atticus but admits to police not reporting it.
Atticus’s loving father, Kevin, is a Golden Apple Special Education teacher, yet has had ZERO say in any of these grave concerns. Kevin has been pro se (self representing) over these matters for years against some of the largest and most powerful law firms in the region. At each step his ability to advocate for his son has been chipped away in light of the steep slope of courtroom prowess he has had to face.
It is terrifying, traumatizing, and has exhausted Atticus’ loved ones emotionally and financially.
Atticus and Kevin now face yet another new legal hurdle, one that could manifest further harm to Atticus for a long time. In unsuccessfully seeking representation Kevin has been told “Justice costs money,” and Atticus and Kevin need your help. ANY contribution to what could easily be over $10,000 in legal bills is welcome and urgently needed. What has been happening to this sweet boy has been heartbreaking, and his advocate now admits he needs community support.
This case involves autism, over-institutionalization, deep flaws in the education and treatment of neurodiverse children, and in some ways an epic system failure of societal safety nets for our most vulnerable citizens.
Help Kevin speak for and protect his son, as he has for the students he has advocated for throughout his career. Kevin is willing to take on any odd jobs, chores, legal advice, and do whatever he can to earn your help. Kevin’s children are his heart and Atticus is a capable and wonderful soul who deserves a champion.
