Sophia Betancourt

For those who do not know how Sophie was injured; I will explain. Sophie was at a friend's house. They were going to ride bicycles.  The bike Sophie used was too big, the present adult lowered the seat so she could get on.

Sophie was coming down her friends very long steeped driveway.  I don't have all the details of the accident, but assume she lost control after building a tremendous speed. She crossed two lanes of traffic at the end of the road before crashing into a tree.

The left side of her face, chest, and skull absorbed the impact. She was immediately unconscious with a head trauma. Sophie was not wearing a helmet, nor any other protective gear.

She was brought by EMS to Mission Health and was assigned under the care of the Trauma Dept. She suffered: several skull fractures, broken mandible, chest injury, broke bone on or around the TMJ, several facial fractures, all of which will require surgery.

She was admitted directly to The Pediatric ICU.  Several procedures have been performed, including: the placement of a  pressure cranial monitor in her brain, two large sections of her skull removed to relieve the building pressure in her brain, chest tube to drain fluid from the impact on her chest, a PICC line, and facial surgery Friday if she has recovered from the meningitis, that was discovered today, and possibly placement of a feeding tube through the abdomen.  Sophia
is in critical condition.

Thank you to all the family and friends who have offered support to our family since Sophia Betancourt 's accident.

Please do not visit the hospital at this time, due to a visitor restriction in order to reduce sound, light, and movement around Sophie while she is in a medically induced coma. This helps control the swelling of her brain. Thank you for all your attention to this matter.

P.S.  As much as Sophia loves gifts, please do not send any at this time. ICU does not allow the patient to have anything in their room.

However; my husband and I will more than likely miss a lot of work. If you would like to contribute to the long healing process of Sophia.  Please visit her "gofundmeaccount"  donations will help elevate the burden of a negative income. Thank you.
