To the wonderful people of Jamaica, we deeply understand the devastating effects this enormous hurricane has inflicted on our cherished island and its inhabitants. Homes, food supplies, infrastructure, hospitals, water supplies, and electricity have all suffered damage or destruction, and livelihoods have been obliterated. Our hearts ache as we witness and hear the suffering of our loved ones; the sorrow is palpable. We want you to know that we see you and feel you in our hearts. Enduring days without light, shelter, water, and food every other day is intolerable, but please hold onto hope. Although it may appear bleak now, this too shall pass. The spirit of the Jamaican people I know is one of faithfulness, resilience, strength, and love. I witnessed this as a child during Hurricane Gilbert, when we united from beginning to end, rebuilding communities by nourishing each other, restoring each neighborhood—one day at a time—with love and gratitude for life.
