(This is the online version of the same Lake Junaluska memorial that was shared in Helen's obituary.) As many of you know, we lost our beloved friend Helen Valerie Ryde earlier this month. Born in Cuckfield, England, and raised in Faversham, Helen later made a cherished home in Lake Junaluska, NC. Their life was marked by a passion for education, justice, and community — and by the simple joy of daily walks around the lake with their wife, Kate, and the friends they welcomed into their circle. For Helen, the lake was more than a view; it was a place where their generous spirit shone most brightly — a place of peace, reflection, laughter, and connection.

To honor Helen’s life and legacy, Kate has established the Helen Ryde Memorial Fund at United Community Bank in Waynesville. Contributions to this fund will support a lasting memorial at Lake Junaluska that celebrates Helen’s spirit and continues their work of building community.
