This all happened very fast. Our Dad was hospitalized in late April due to liver failure and was in the ICU a majority of the time while we waited for him to get a liver transplant. The process of getting a new liver is challenging to say the least. The doctors told us that for every ten people there is one liver available. Our family pulled together to do everything we could to help our Dad hold on to hope and get him on a transplant list. There are many factors that go into play when you are in need of an organ. The amount of family support, your commitment to a healthy lifestyle, how old you are, the urgency behind your current state of health, and any other health issues from your past all tally up to your hierarchy on a list of other people needing the same thing as you. The hospital has done an amazing job taking care of him and as a family, now more than ever, we can appreciate the meaning of “strength in numbers”.
Through a tremendous amount of prayer, positivity and of course some luck...
Dad had his liver transplant surgery on June 7th. It was a 10 hour surgery and we're happy to report he handled it like a champ and his body is responding well.
This surgery was the first big step in what will now be a long road to recovery. Once our Dad is released from the hospital, his recovery will require 24/7 intensive caretaking from home. The projected timeframe for continuous caretaking is 8+ weeks. This includes 2-3 trips to the hospital per week. The commute from his home is 2hrs long, each way. The family is going to be sharing the responsibilities of nurturing and guiding Dad to full recovery. He is going to be discharged from the hospital and officially put into our care within a week.
We are starting this Go Fund Me to help share the financial cost that comes with this type of intensive family care. Even the smaller items like gas, groceries, airfare, and parking seem to add up fast. The funds will also help support the family and our Dad, as each individual takes time away from work and the loss of income that accompanies that. All of the donations and support from the Go Fund Me will be used to help our Dad and each member of the family that spends the next few months taking care of him.
It's times like these where every little bit of support makes a big difference. Thank you for whatever you can do to help and all the love that comes with it. We are forever grateful.
