New Highland Mosaic Mural Project

My name is Alicia Arnold and I am the Visual Arts teacher at New Highland Academy, a Title 1 public elementary school serving underprivileged families in East Oakland, California. See more about our school here!

We are excited to invite the local professional sculptor, painter, and muralist Fernando Hernandez to our school to engage in a mosaic mural as an artist in residence with our school community!  Mr. Hernandez will work together with a team of teachers to create an inspiring and interactive learning experience. We will develop a curriculum based on the theme of resilience. We will use the mosaic mural process as a means to engage in mathematics and science concepts, to support critical thinking skills, and to promote civic engagement with our students.

The entirety of this project is supported by grants, donations and the work of volunteers; the scope of our project depends on the funds we are able to raise. This means that the more funding we receive, the more materials we can purchase and the more hours our muralist will be able to spend on the project.

Over the course of several months, Mr. Hernandez will visit our East Oakland public elementary school as an artist in residence. He will introduce himself and his work and the story of how he came to be a professional artist. Mr. Hernandez will then collaborate on mural design with teachers and students and work with families to create the mural at our school. This process involves extensive gathering and organization of materials, collaboration with our Family Resource Center to engage parents in the project, meeting  with teachers to align the curriculum with the classroom, teaching three lessons per week in the classroom, and organizing the production of the mural.

Thank you so much for your support!
