To all those acquainted with my family and me, it is with a heavy heart that I share the unexpected passing of my beloved mother in July of 2022. Despite this profound loss, my family and I are committed to preserving her legacy for years to come. As we approach September, the month my mother, Jimi Goodman, would have celebrated her 50th birthday, my family and I find solace in commemorating her life while contributing to the well-being of the Durango community.
Behind the scenes, however, not everyone may have been aware of my mother's struggle with alcoholism over the years. Jimi was a vibrant, compassionate, and delightful presence, yet the grip of alcoholism led her life down an unforeseen path. Last year, our community extended remarkable financial support to my sisters and me during our time of need, for which we remain eternally grateful. This September, I am driven to give back, particularly to the children in Durango who confront the challenges of having parents grappling with substance abuse disorders and the need for external assistance.
The American Addiction Centers emphasize that a family history of alcohol misuse carries a 50% likelihood of predisposition to alcohol use disorder (AUD). In contrast, my sisters and I were privileged to have parents who provided both stability and guidance, fostering our path toward healthy and prosperous lives. However, countless children across the United States lack these advantages, exposing them to heightened risks that can cast shadows over their present and future.
By contributing to this cause and supporting the J. Goodman 50K ultra race, an endeavor conceived to honor my late mother's 50th birthday, your donation will directly benefit the Oak Tree Youth Resource Center in Durango, CO. The Oak Tree Organization supports local youth with their basic needs, education, employment, and housing instability for those who cannot live at home for a variety of reasons.
As an educator within the Durango 9R district, I have made it my mission to safeguard and empower the future of our community. Drawing from my personal experience as a child affected by parental addiction, I am determined to expand resource opportunities for children with parents of substance abuse. Thank you for reading this and for considering donating to this cause. Even just $10 will provide someone with a personal hygiene kit or bus pass.
