My mom loved her homeland, Guatemala, deeply. Even though she left when she was 16 and spent 33 years in San Diego, she always missed her childhood home, Madronales. Despite her many health issues and dialysis treatments, she always wanted to go back.

Mi mamá amaba profundamente su tierra natal, Guatemala. Aunque se fue cuando tenía 16 años y pasó 33 años en San Diego, siempre añoraba su casa de la infancia, Madronales. A pesar de sus muchos problemas de salud y tratamientos de diálisis, siempre quiso volver.

She adored Guatemala and longed to stay there permanently. Independently, she worked and paid for funeral insurance, ensuring her final journey home. But because of some problems with the insurance, we couldn't do it. If we had used my mom's funeral insurance, they would have planned to move her right away, without a chance for a final "see you later alligator".

Adoraba Guatemala y anhelaba quedarse allí permanentemente. Independientemente, trabajó y pagó por un seguro de funeral, asegurando su último viaje a casa. Pero debido a algunos problemas con el seguro, no pudimos hacerlo. Si hubiéramos usado el seguro de funeral de mi mamá, habrían planeado trasladarla de inmediato, sin la oportunidad para un último "hasta luego cocodrilo".

My siblings and I chose to skip my mom’s funeral insurance so that our family and friends could say goodbye and share her memories of her at her wake.
