Even before we were married four years ago, we knew we wanted kids together. Jake works with children as an educator, while Rook helped care for all of their nieces and nephews. We know from experience that we genuinely love kids and love taking care of them. Unfortunately, we also knew it would be more difficult for us to start our family because we are a queer couple and would need donor sperm.
It turned out to be far harder than we ever expected and the closest we've come to success at starting our family has been two miscarriages. If you've experienced a pregnancy loss, you know how devastating it can be, to mourn a million different futures that will never come to pass, to love someone the rest of the world will never know. With every year, our dream of growing our family seemed further and further away.
After a lot of emotional healing from our grief and consulting with a fertility specialist, we have a path forward and our doctor is optimistic about our odds provided we act in the next few months.
We are looking at $22,200 for one IVF cycle of egg retrieval plus donor sperm and embryo transfer. Hopefully, we'll be able to get discounts on some of the meds, which could reduce those costs by ~$2000, but we can't count on that. We're also hoping for a grant to cover some of the costs, but that's a bit like winning the lottery and--again--cannot be counted on. There is also the risk that we'll need to do multiple cycles. We do have savings, but to save enough for everything could take years and every day we wait our odds of success go down.
Our fervent hope is that we'll have success with our first egg retrieval, but we have to be realistic that this may not be the case. Currently, we're asking for the bare minimum to cover the gap between our savings and this first cycle. Anything we receive that goes over that amount will go towards a second cycle if needed, or embryo storage if not.
We are hopeful and scared and so grateful for everyone who is supporting us on this journey.
