Hi everyone. We need your help. Thank you for taking the time to read our story. In 2017 Anya and I decided to begin our journey toward parenthood. We were extremely lucky that our very first IUI (intrauterine insemination) attempt was successful and we welcomed our sweet son Finn into the world in June 2018! We dreamed of having a second child to add to our little family but so far have not been successful. One miscarriage and three more unsuccessful IUI attempts later our next step and best option (given my age) is an IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycle.
The price tag for one cycle of IVF and the associated medications is quite steep. The clinic in Vancouver where we have been traveling to for treatment has quoted us a cost between $20,000 and $25,000 (not including the donor sperm, travel and accommodation costs). The cost varies because the dosages of medications will be adjusted depending on how my body responds during egg stimulation. At this time the BC government does not cover any of the costs of IVF fertility treatment. It is possible to try another round of IUI instead, which has a much lower cost, but the success rate is a very low 5% (I am almost 4 years older than when we tried for Finn). IVF has a much higher success rate and we have been advised by our doctor that we have a very high chance of pregnancy with IVF.
And so we have been exploring funding options. We have been approved for a loan for approximately half the cost and have another small amount to use for travel and accommodation costs. It is our last resort to ask our community for financial help to continue with the IVF process. We didn’t want to go this route, preferring to keep our losses and pain to ourselves, but with a little encouragement from a couple of friends we decided to put this out there. This is our last chance to try for another child. One round of IVF treatment, which we hope to go ahead with this July or August. We humbly ask you for help.
