June 29, 2022 will forever be remembered as the day I chose me; the day I had bariatric surgery (vertical sleeve gastrectomy), a decision that ultimately saved my life. Almost three years later, I've now lost over 200 lbs from my highest weight of 350 lbs, and am essentially at my goal weight... but the journey isn't quite over yet.
As you can imagine, significant weight loss (especially when you lose it quickly) often leads to a ridiculous amount of loose skin - which I indeed have plenty of. I am also currently dealing with a number of other pain related health issues, and the excess skin has only added to those problems. I've now had three plastics consultations, and as you can imagine, they all come with a hefty price tag. While each surgeon I've met with considers my procedures to be of medical necessity, my insurance companies do not see it that way, and will not pay for anything... which is why I find myself needing to ask for assistance.
As of right now, I will be having five extensive procedures done at BC Plastics in Tijuana with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Alex Galvez. It's roughly a 7-8 hour surgical day and will include at least 2 nights in the hospital, and 6 nights in the recovery hotel with around-the-clock care. And while I was initially preparing myself to have to do this trip solo, I am so beyond grateful to have a friend who has offered to go with me, so I won't be there alone.
So... what is the cost?
Let's break it down:
Procedures: $13,900
Compression Garments & Required Products: $390
2 Night Hospital Stay: $4,200
Includes:
Compression Stockings
EKG
Pre-Op Blood Work
Surgical Risk Assessment By Internal Medicine Doctor
Operating Room Fees
Anesthesia
Anesthesiologist Fee
Pain Pump
Transportation: $140
To and From San Diego
To and From Hospital
To and From Hotel
Any Transportation For Medical Care
Nights at Hotel with Post-Op Care: $1,560
Daily Visit By Physician
Valet Service
24 Hour Nursing Care
Daily Meals
The grand total: $20,190... and still cheaper than other estimates I've received. I'll also be putting money aside for airline tickets, the deposit that needs to be paid up front in order to book my surgery, tips, and a little extra to bring "just in case."
I realize that this is a huge ask, and I will be the first to tell you that I do not like asking for help - but to make this happen on my own, I would need to save for the next three years and health-wise, I'm not able to wait that long. My journey thus far has not been an easy one, and I haven't come this far to ONLY come this far. I would be forever grateful if you'd consider helping me to complete this journey.
