Ivan the Amish Dog's Surgery
Donation protected
This is Ivan the Amish dog. We got him from an Amish farmer up the road. They raise these shepard/coonhound mix dogs for rounding up farm animals. He's named after the Amish boy, Ivan Miller, who sold him to us.
We just love this little guy. We live out in the country so he had room to run, and run he did. I think he was born to fetch. We play Chuckit for hours. He'd do it all day if we would. He follows me around the house with a tennis ball in his mouth, dropping it at my feet when I stop.
Our house is 350 feet from the road so cars aren't usually an issue when the dogs are outside. While Ivan and I were looking for a lost tennis ball closer to the road, a car came rushing by and Ivan bolted out after it. He was too fast for me and he was hit on his right side by the car's rear tire. I saw the whole thing. Poor Ivan even pooped. I ran out and scooped him up, told the driver thanks for stopping and ran to the house screaming for my daughter to call the vet.
We rushed him to our vet hospital and x-rays showed a shattered right shoulder, a cracked rib, a collapsed lung and possible brusing on his heart. We were devistated. When the vet asked if we wanted to move forward and fix him, we said yes, please. When we asked if he was going to live, the vet paused, (which was pretty scarry) and said the lung had to inflate before they could operate and that 95% of the time they do come back. We held on to that number.
Well, 2 days later, Ivan's lung is back working and they can give him anesthesia for surgery on his shoulder. If all goes well, he'll be home in a day.
His vet bill will be over $4000. The vet hospital said I had to pay in full when we picked him up. When I said I couldn't pay it all now, they agreed on half when we get him and the remaining by the end of June. This is going to be difficult for us. We thought we might try crowd funding for half the bill. Drop a fiver in the till. Everyone who does will get an autographed photo of Ivan.
Thanks.
