It’s Time To Give Back To Signor

Signor Vincenzo Maio, affectionately known as “Sig”, was an Italian teacher in the Bethpage School District for 36 years and a Spanish and French teacher for another 10 years. During these 46 years Signor became like family to so many in the Bethpage community. He would selflessly give of his time to attend as many sporting events, school activities, graduations, weddings and other ceremonies for his Bethpage families.

His pride and joy was the San Giuseppe Festival, the annual celebration of all things Italian. Hundreds of community members descended on Bethpage High School to partake in this celebration of Italian food and culture. He also loved taking annual trips to Little Italy and Rockefeller Center to see the Tree lighting. Several alumni recall these trips as being among the highlights of their memories in Bethpage.

Throughout his 46 years and even post retirement, Signor donated lunches, pastries, cakes and countless Italian decorations to his beloved BHS. He would bear no expense in making sure everything was done to perfection.

Unfortunately, Signor has fallen on some hard times and needs the community’s help. This past September, Signor had a terrible fall in his house. He wound up breaking his knee cap and shin and suffered whiplash. He spent the next three months in hospitals and a rehab facility. Miraculously, he made it home for Christmas. But he still requires an aid for 12 hours a day, seven days a week. The last several months have been financially draining to say the least.
