IT’S THE MIDWIFE FOR ME
The time has finally come to follow my passion and pursue midwifery!
TL;DR
I'm a Black birthworker/ doula in Los Angeles and I'm starting midwifery school THIS MONTH! Because there is no financial aid available for this program I need community support to attend!
The United States is home to…
-Less than 300 Black Midwives
-Less than 20 Black owned free standing birth centers
-Only 1 BLACK OWNED MIDWIFERY SCHOOL.
I'm officially a student midwife Commonsense Childbirth School of Midwifery - the FIRST & ONLY BLACK OWNED MIDWIFERY SCHOOL.

After being a birthworker/doula for several years and spending time with growing BIPOC families I can no longer ignore my calling to pursue midwifery. Because of the current medical structure becoming a midwife has little to no institution support AND SO I NEED COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
WHY ARE MIDWIVES IMPORTANT?
Midwives play an instrumental role to introduce birthing people to the health system and ensure that pregnant folks and their babies receive a continuum of skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth, and in the important days and weeks after birth. Yet millions of people give birth without the support of trained midwives.
Each year, 358,000 birthing people die while pregnant or giving birth and some two million newborns die within the first 24 hours of life because of inadequate or insufficient health care. According to the 2011 State of the World’s Midwifery report, up to 3.6 million deaths could be avoided each year in 58 developing countries if midwifery services are upgraded
*Midwives are integrated into every “developed” country’s medical system EXCEPT AMERICA.
WHY ARE BLACK MIDWIVES IMPORTANT?
There are less than 2% of Black midwives in America and Black people are 243% more likely to die from childbirth related causes than white folks. We know the power of providers that look like us and how have an understanding of our world!
