Formerly incarcerated organizer, activist, and artist BP is facing multiple crises at the same time right now.
Health: Two years ago BP had to have their heart restarted after having palpitations for an hour straight. They were diagnosed with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia though the underlying cause is still unknown. BP was able to raise enough funds to relocate to Seattle, living paycheck to paycheck since then while scheduling various doctors appointments to get to the bottom of their ongoing health issues. Due to this BP faces chronic disability issues that limit their ability to work consistent hours.
Housing Instability and Unexpected Rent Increase: BP is also facing housing instability, forced into an unsustainable situation. When they first moved in seven months ago rent was an affordable $512 a month for a room in a shared house. However, without warning, rent has gone up over $200, not including the additional costs of utilities that can range up to $250 a month.
Wrongfully Suspended From Gig Job: Two weeks ago BP’s DoorDash account was locked without notice & later deactivated because of “unpaid” traffic tickets that had already been paid, and in some cases years ago.. This caused BP to lose their primary means of income as a delivery driver. BP’s appeal of the decision was denied and now their dispute has been sent to a third party background check provider, Checkr. The third party site states even if tickets have been paid they will remain on the driver’s record, despite doordash claiming otherwise. This leaves little optimism for the appeals process.
About BP:
A little bit about BP they are an artist, organizer, activist, and content creator that has been supporting communities across the nation as a core member of Fight Toxic Prisons. They educate folks on the fight against P.I.C., support mutual aid efforts, organize action for ecological justice, & the international struggle for human rights. BP has struggled with housing and economic instability since childhood. Their work is vital, but they need support to continue living and organizing. Despite the challenges they face they continue to be dedicated to the movement & supporting various communities.
