Our school: Ithafa Secondary School is located in the Wesselton township of Ermelo, South Africa and serves over 1500 low-income black students, grades 8-12. Ithafa is the only Math, Science, and Technology (MST) school located in Wesselton, and corporate sponsorships have provided limited funding for technological resources such as smartboards, science lab equipment, and E-learning seminars. Although the math and science departments receive certain supports, general education resources are severely lacking. One of the biggest gaps is a functioning school library.
While there is a designated library space, it only contains outdated textbooks; there is no literature or non-fiction, and the space has no chairs, tables, or other learning resources. The absence of these resources has severe impacts on student learning. Literacy is fundamental for all subject areas, and students cannot build their reading, writing, and speaking skills without regular access to books.
The students of Ithafa are eager to have a functioning library, and understand its importance for their education. Over the past couple of months, groups of students have been dedicating their time after school to clean and prepare the space to become a full-functioning library. With a newly formed library committee of students and staff, Ithafa is ready to take on this renovation!
Our project: Now we are getting ready to turn the library into a space where students can comfortably spend their time and further their educational engagement. First and foremost, we need to buy books across subject areas and reading levels. To complete the renovation, we need chairs, tables, whiteboards, and general office supplies.
With your help, we can create a library for this highly-deserving school. Investing in these resources today will have a tremendous impact on students for years to come.
