Ithacan Philanthropic Soc. Cyclone Recovery Appeal

Donation protected

On 18th September 2020, Cyclone Ianos has left a trail of destruction across Ithaca, Greece leaving homes, businesses, public infrastructure and farmland badly damaged.  The damage is not only structures, but also includes people's livelihoods, crops, their livetsock and pets.

It is our time to give back to the place and the people who have given us so much, because they need it right now more than ever.

The Ithacan Philanthropic Society (IPS) Melbourne has donated $5,000 to establish an recovery fund to assist Ithaca's recovery.  Ithaca has been declared a State of Emergency.

The initial target is $60,000, although this simply won't be enough to remedy the damage.  All donations are greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. The IPS would be grateful for your financial support to help the many people and small businesses on the road of recovery post this awful event.  Please post in your own circles and group so we can reach as many people as possible

The cyclone has come at a time when the local economy has already suffered from a major fall in tourism due to COVID-19. It is understood that insurance and emergency services are not always available or accessible, and as a result, this may impact the recovery process.

All donations are governed by the IPS Donation Policy. Funds will be made distributed after consultation with local leaders and the broader island communities to ensure the most immediate needs can be satisfied. The Executive Committee is currently seeking advice from the Mayor of Ithaca and other leaders in Ithaca as to the most pressing requirements and to those where the funds can be best allocated.  Once those needs can be established, the Committee will release funds to those in need and also subject to Greek Government funding that has only been partially announced.

Details of the administration of the Funds will be made available at the Society's web page at www.ithaca.org.au where further details regarding the Society are available.  Members will also receive an update over the fund raising period which will also be posted on our website.  Please contact us if you would like a copy of our donations policy.

The Ithacan Philanthropic Society is committed to assisting organisations and individuals that support community services or activities, specifically relating to health, social welfare, arts, education and Ithacan/Greek culture.

We thank you for your support.
