My name is Delynn Parker and I am starting a campaign that I know can make a difference in the world today, won't you join me?
Coming up this weekend is a fundraising event, be sure to invite anyone you like and lets show our support for A Celebratory Event for suicide prevention this sunday .
For those that know me, you know that I am passionate about a great many things, but nothing as much as mental health, depression and the often-closeted subject of suicide. It’s time to change the conversation.
How can we stay quiet with statistics like these?
· Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds in the U.S. (same ages have highest success rate with treatment).
· Suicide is 10th leading cause of death for all ages (1 every 13 mins.)
· There are 25 attempts for every suicide completion.
· Globally close to 1 million a year die by suicide (which equals 25 million people suffering and contemplating suicide, often silently)
Let those numbers sink in and get passionate.
Suicide touches EVERYONE, it’s time it’s treated as such, without WHISPERS or SHAME.
If we are losing so many people, especially our youth, to this often treatable/preventable tragedy, then why isn't there more attention given to it? Where are all the positive messages about how we can help? Where is the openly positive marketing to garner more public support and awareness? Where are the celebrities, the music, the fundraising, the press, the heroes, the cool tshirts, the concerts, the events, etc.?
Well, I plan on doing a little something about that.
So Let’s do this!
This campaign and the money raised will support a two-pronged approach:
1) “It Could Save A Life” a concert celebrating life, courage & suicide prevention.
We will put into motion what will be an annual celebratory event starting this fall on Sept 11th 2016 in honor of 'World Suicide Prevention Day'. This year will be a small event at a great local bar/food establishment called Asiento at 2730 21st St. on the corner of Bryant in SF. Going from 5pm-11pm we will have The Tom Jonesing duo, a comedian, a dj and more. With your support, we will create a non-profit that will help this event grow every year. There is no better city than San Francisco to begin what may grow to be a historical event of music, comedy, inspiration and education. We will celebrate life as well as the strength and courage of those suffering and say ‘Good Job!’ and ‘Thank You!’ for being here, because music, laughter, positive feedback and validation... could save a life. 2) “Tell It Like It Is” with Delynn: A Research & Recognition Tour.
Last November I gave a successful talk to 100 people on the perennial challenges of suicide and depression. I would like to continue that conversation by going on the road right now, speaking to individuals or groups on the subject. I will be interviewing people who know suffering, researching and collecting data on what REALLY helps them? What has actually improved their lives? What has increased hopefulness or has given them better tools/skills to live?
We have also created a survey for people to take anonymously and post or share anywhere they want. Just copy and paste this link https://goo.gl/forms/UDrY2SVvH7EP8utP2
This collected data will help inform us and other organizations on how best to prevent or treat suicidal depression and ideation.
On this tour I will start a new positive conversation and it begins with offering a great big CONGRATULATIONS & THANK YOU to those suffering and to those helping! It's time to openly acknowledge the generosity of a spirit that keeps on trying, to congratulate people on their strength, courage and tenacity in life! If we could start a movement that helps replace the excessive silence and shame around mental illness and suicide with some positive feedback, I know we are improving lives. Help me give people Certificates of Recognition, blue ribbons, proud hugs and maybe even a website where they can tell their stories of courage in... braving another day. There they could continue to openly receive the positive feedback that has been so lacking.
(Future site will be at www.bravinganotherday.org)
To this campaign I bring my 30 years of experience working with young people, my work as a School Counselor, my gumption, humor and my own personal experience. I am dedicated to sharing what I know, sharing my time and involving my greatest asset, which is all YOU amazing people of the Bay Area and beyond. Being from Palo Alto, a community that has been struggling with a cluster of teenage suicide for years, I feel drawn to speak up and help out.
Funds raised will be distributed into thirds.
· The Research & Recognition Road.
· The Concert and event production in San Francisco.
· My fulltime work & dedication for the summer.
This is a lot of work, but work that I feel very passionate and inspired to do. I will keep updating this project and adding information, challenges, successes and needs as the summer progresses.
Please share this campaign with others, help connect us with people who care, who have lost loved ones and to those who have stories to tell. I would really appreciate any contacts in music, comedy, booking, relevant non-profit work, fundraising/grant writing, tech/web support and companies/organizations for sponsorship.
Let's make history together and save some lives!
