It's On Me

A teenager is looking for independence and control over his life, but he finds himself trying to line up his priorities with that of his mother’s.
> Any contribution is appreciated towards bringing this film to life. In doing so, you will not only receive a film credit in the final movie but will also be supporting the Arts and young creators who are attempting to present the world through the lens of personal experience and storytelling.

What our film is about : Yusuf is a dutiful teenager who helps his mother, Sakina, with her work at a    kebab shop. During an exchange of a sexually fuelled text conversation with his secret girlfriend, he is accidentally interrupted by Sakina. This incident leads to a confrontation between the mother and son. Their argument forces them to understand each other’s contribution to their family.

A word from our Director :  I am the Writer and Director of this film and this is a graduating project for the crew and I. The idea behind this film came from a thought which involved having recognition for one’s  own contribution to their family or relationship. It evolved into a story  about a Muslim teenager building his identity in a Western world who is also looking for independence regarding the choices he makes in his life while acknowledging his mother’s sacrifices for him. The film is set in a Muslim household in Melbourne. Thus, while the story will shine a light on a culture that exists in the Australian society which isn't fully understood, the narrative is in fact about complex communication, attitudes and familial relationships.

The film deals with the following themes :
> Coming of age - Yusuf's relationship with Erica and the desire to be independent
> Ethics and Technology - Sexting, Exploring new age relationships and moral ambiguity
> Identity and Belonging - Finding oneself in between two different worlds/cultures
> Immigrant experience - Helping a parent who is dependent on their child and raising a child to know their culture and beliefs
