It's Hard to Learn When You're Hungry
Donation protected
Hi! I'm a retired teacher with a heart for education. Last year I connected online with a 3rd grade teacher from Malawi, Africa. I was shocked to learn she had over 250 students in her class. No desks, no chairs, no electricity, no food, no water, and few resources. Students sit on a mud brick floor they made themselves so they don't have to sit in the dirt. They walk up to 2 hours each day to come to school. Many have never owned a pair of shoes. Over the last year with help from friends, we have gathered and shipped educational supplies and built and stocked a henhouse. A teacher in St. Louis, Theresa Reando, raised enough money for a borehole for fresh water. We are now working together for this cause. And just this month, the African teacher came to the USA on a humanitarian visa thanks to a teacher in North Carolina and she stayed with 3 of us. Since then, I decided to reach for the stars and try to feed all of the children in this school - over 1500 children and their teachers. Many of them live on one meal a day. Teachers are not permitted to bring food to school because it would upset the children to see them eating food. My goal is to build a sustainable food system at the school, and I am currently working to determine the best method for this. In the meantime, I'd like to get some food to these children. Because it's very hard to learn when you haven't had any food in the last 24 hours. Every dollar goes a really long way! Any extra funds will be used to pay for shipping on already donated educational supplies. Please help!
