To know Treva is to love her, I am sure you all will agree. I have known Treva(or as I call her Bing) for over 20 years and I have witnessed her over and over give of herself, even when she had nothing to give and ask nothing in return. This last year has been a very hard year for Treva.... Medically, Emotionally and now Financially.
A little back ground to bring you to the current date.... On July 8th of 2019, while driving to work, Treva started to feel funny, something was not right, she then started to lose function on one side of her body, she managed to get off the road and sat for a few minutes and then continued back to work. By the time she got to work she was much worse, she had a very difficult time walking into the building and putting thoughts/words together. When she finally got to her desk her good friend and coworker noticed something was very wrong and brought her to the company medical center and from there she was sent to the ER as they believed she was having a Stroke, yes Treva was having a stoke and this had been going on already over 90 minutes. By the time she made it to the ER she was just shy of the 3 hour cut off to get the thrombolytic medication that is suppose to help with the Stoke and lessen the damage caused by the stroke, luckily she made it. Treva was in the hospital almost another week and had 2 more small strokes with in the time she was in the hospital.
Fast forward..Needless to say , Treva was out of work for a couple months( which her saving took a hit as she has a HIGH deductible insurance plan and received disability from work which is only partial pay) and started back to work part time from home when the second blow hit her, and if you ask her.. this one was worse than the Stroke... If you know Treva then you know everything about her best friend, actually Soulmate Rufus... Rufus was Treva's world so much so she bought a house just so he could have a back yard. On the night of September 23, Treva was out back on the deck playing ball ( and working on her PT) with Rufus as they did every night... all of a sudden he let out a big cry, walked towards her, but couldn't lift his head. Treva was able to get him in the house but knew he needed to get to the vet he couldn't lift his head, only wanted to lay down and his breathing was now very rapid. She called her amazing neighbors helped her get Rufus into her car and she rushed him to the animal hospital. Sadly by the time she got him to the hospital Rufus had stopped breathing. Treva spared no expense to have the Dr's try to revive him but sadly, this was not that case. During the ultrasound that they did while trying to figure out what was going on as they tried to revive him they noticed a large tumor on his spleen, this was not there 2 week prior at his last vet visit. The conclusion was Rufus had Hemangiosarcomas, they call it a silent killer. Treva had just lost her best friend.
Again knowing Treva , she has so much love to give she decided to honor Rufus and adopt another shelter dog, Reggie. Reggie looked very similar to Rufus and was a younger dog( last picture), it was hard, but she knew it is what Rufus would have wanted. Reggie was a challenge in the beginning, he had very severe separation anxiety and was a nipper( he still had puppy tendencies and was never trained when he was younger) These are somethings that Treva came home to or even walked into from another room to.. He ate her new adjustable bed her carpeting in her foyer his bed the molding just to name a few.. and when crated... he would cry like you were beating him. But she never gave up on him, when Treva loves you, she does not give up on you. So beyond the cost of replacing/fixing what he damaged she even reached out to the trainers that worked with Rufus . Their suggestions started to make a difference just in time for the third major blow to Treva.
In the beginning of February 2020 came her blow...Treva was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer the most aggressive of all the Breast Cancers ( Triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC) is a kind of breast cancer that does not have any of the receptors that are commonly found in breast cancer. Think of cancer cells as a house. The front door may have three kinds of locks, called receptors. If your cancer has any of these three locks, doctors have a few keys (like hormone therapy or other drugs) they can use to help destroy the cancer cells.)But if you have triple-negative breast cancer, it means those three locks aren’t there. So doctors have fewer keys for treatment. Fortunately, chemotherapy is still an effective option. ). Currently there is no cure for Triple-negative breast cancer mainly because there are fewer targeted medications that treat this type of cancer. Studies have shown that TNBC is likely to spread beyond the breast and is more likely to recur( come back) after treatment.
The treatment is aggressive and started with in 2 weeks of her diagnosis and in between she had a port implanted and shortly after she had to have lymph nodes removed . After her first treatment Treva started losing her hair, by her second treatment she lost so much she needed to shave her head ( a HUGE reality check). At this point she was still working, but from home ... and lets not forget this is the time COVID appeared as well. Not only did she had to worry about normal germs and colds, now she had to worry about this. Around this time she started to show the additional signs of the side effects from chemo, we all know how bad they are. Treva could no longer work at this point and due to the fact she had her stroke less than 9 months prior she could not get the full amount of her disability and it continues to lessen. Currently she is only getting 70% of her pay and it is due to drop again. This is a big hit when you are solelyresponsible for paying everything .
Lets back up to Reggie at this point.... blow four....Shortly after treatment started Reggie's disposition started to change towards Treva, he started be coming aggressive towards her, it is thought that he could smell the poison or chemical changes in her body. Treva reached out to the shelter that she adopted Rufus and Reggie from and they have a program to assist Pawents with Cancer. Every Saturday Reggie went out on a play date for the day, but this didn't change how he was towards Treva and at this point she could not protect herself. It was suggested to her that maybe Reggie should be placed in a new home, Treva is not one to give up, as we are all aware, she said "no", but after more time passed she knew she had to, not only for her safety but for for his happiness. Treva agreed and he is currently in a foster home that he is thriving in, he is accepting the training is looking like he found his Furever home. This was a heart breaking decision for her, but it was the right decision for them both. Treva gets daily updates and he is thriving.
Back to Treva's current situation... Treva's bank account is depleting, she still has her mortgage, her high deductible health insurance and then the coinsurance, daily living expenses, car insurance, phone and all the bills that she had before plus now additional ones due having cancer. Treva swallowed her pride, and has reached out to organizations for assistance but has been declined for one reason or another, some reasons as silly as she is single. Treva is solely responsible for all the bills, she is a single woman trying to navigate through all of this medically and financially. Treva just finished her chemo ( they ended it early as it was causing her liver to shut down) and they canceled a few sessions due to her platelets being so low and needing a transfusion. Her surgery date is set for September 10th and after surgery she will be needing Radiation and then she found out yesterday that she may be on a form of chemo the rest of her life as the cancer is spread into her lymph nodes. The earliest that Treva MAY be able to return to work is after the first of the year and that would be a few hours a week.
Treva has done so much for everyone, she is truly the one that would give you the shirt off her back even if it was the only one she had. I am asking on behalf of Treva as she never would ask, please as her village, lets help her. The stress of worrying about money and what is going to happen is not helping her battle against this aggressive monster. We can give her some sort of relief, some comfort going into this surgery knowing her village has her back. Any little bit helps, even giving up Starbucks for a day adds up and can make a difference. If you can not donate please share this it is just as helpful. Lets show Treva the love that she shows all of us.
I know this was long, but thank you for hanging in with me. Stay Safe
