It Takes a Village: Supporting My Artist Residency Journey
Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,
I am thrilled to share some exciting news: I’ve been offered the opportunity of a lifetime to attend a three-month artist residency at the prestigious Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico! This is a monumental moment in my career as a playwright, musical theatre writer, and opera librettist, and it marks several firsts for me. It’s my first time participating in a residency of this magnitude, my first time being away for months to focus solely on my craft, and my first time winning a playwriting award.
As a Black working-class artist who doesn’t come from financial security, this opportunity means the world to me. It’s a chance to fully immerse myself in my art, connect with fellow creatives, and dedicate uninterrupted time to writing. Although the residency includes a stipend, it’s not enough to cover all the essential expenses to feel safe and secure while I’m there. That’s why I’m reaching out to ask for your support.
I’ve made arrangements to ensure my rent is covered while I’m away, but once I arrive in Taos, I’ll need help covering costs like food, transportation, travel, and unexpected expenses (like emergencies, clothing, or healthcare needs). Your contribution, no matter the size, would make a tremendous difference in ensuring that I can make the most of this incredible opportunity without financial stress.
This residency is not just about me—it’s about amplifying voices and stories that often go unheard. It really takes a village to support the arts and ensure that diverse stories have a chance to thrive. Your support not only allows me to continue creating work that reflects the diversity of our world and challenges audiences to see things from new perspectives, but it also uplifts artists in similar positions who face barriers to opportunities like this.
If you’re able to contribute, you can support me through GoFundMe. Every dollar helps, and even sharing this message with your network would mean so much.
Thank you for believing in me and my work. I can’t wait to share the stories that come from this transformative experience.
With gratitude,
Marcus
