November 13, 1988, in the middle of a rainy Portland night three young white men fueled by racial hate murdered Mulugeta Seraw, (ሙሉጌታ ስራው,) a beautiful and beloved immigrant son, father, and nephew.

It Did Happen Here is an independent, collectively created and produced podcast , book and free high school curriculum centering an oral history featuring over 30 voices of disparate groups of everyday people in Portland, Oregon who came together after the terrible event, and chased overt violent white racist skinheads out of the music scene and off the streets of the Rose City.

Hiphop educator, artist, author, and veteran street fighter Mic Crenshaw—who as a teenage member of the Minneapolis Baldies stood up to the Klan in the Twin Cities and co-founded the national organization Anti Racist Action—joined writer, author, and longtime agitprop activist Moe Bowstern, in 2024 to take It Did Happen Here to Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. Mic and Moe—along with special guests featured in the podcast—where they held important public conversations about root causes of racial violence in the United States, and what our histories and lived experience can teach us about addressing white supremacy today.

We are proud to have profoundly influenced the brand new documentary Remember Mulugeta Confronting Hate In Oregon that aired February 18, 2026 from Oregon Public Broadcasting. Our book is a primary document that continues to uplift and educate, even as its creators and those we interviewed are not associated with major organizations and continue to labor in independent creative media and other areas.

The tour funds came up short but we struggled through! We are recouping from the shortfall, paying for the website to keep the podcast alive, ordering more shirts, which are in demand and supporting artists as groceries triple, and our time is more in demand than ever as mobilizers, organizers, and activists during this era of upheaval. Times are tough these days, if you are not in a place to donate, please share widely, listen to the podcast, and tell your friends and family! Unite to fight! Thank you!
