Much of who I am today is partly because of the great group of friends I’ve made during my formative years in school. Growing up, I’ve always been a shy and awkward kid. But for some reason, Issa, a gorgeous and vivacious freshman, chose to be my friend. She was outgoing, bubbly and fun—everything I was not. I’m sure she had no idea that her infectious laugh, blunt honesty, and carefree attitude inspired me to smile a little wider, laugh a little harder, and step out of my comfort zone a little bit more often.

Decades later and even an ocean away, I still remember her sparkling eyes and cheery laugh. It was a joy to reconnect with her and the rest of UPIS Batch ’95 two years ago for our 25th High School Reunion. But then came a heartbreaking diagnosis a year after (in 2021)—Stage 4 breast cancer. It still boggles my mind until now--how a single mom with 4 kids, at the prime of her life, now must deal with such a devastating illness. But a testament to Issa’s strength of character is her determination to keep living, to keep fighting—even through the days when she is in so much pain she can barely move. We, her family and friends, chose to be strong WITH her. To choose to fight this cancer battle WITH her. I share this story with you in the hopes that you can join us fight with and for Issa. Cancer doesn’t care if you are rich or poor—it is still the same affliction, the same devastation that causes pain and anxiety for the person and his/her loved ones.

On behalf of Issa, I kindly ask for your help ease the financial burden she is facing as she undergoes treatment and care. Our goal is to reach $2500 to cover her mounting medical expenses.
