Santa cruz de Islote and Isla Múcura are two islands that are located in the Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Park, two hours from Cartagena. These islands are inhabited by two Afro-descendant fishing communities. The infrastructure for housing and basic services is very precarious. Fishermen and their families make a living from fishing and tourism.
Each community has a school and an ecological group: "the reef saviors" and Los Meros Sabios ". The children of the islands have been working for the recovery of the reef and for the preservation of sea turtles for ten years.
Today due to the Covid 19 pandemic, schools and the park are closed. Fishermen and their families are in a vulnerable situation because they have no income. Children's education is at risk, as teachers have returned home, and access to internet and technology on the island is very limited.
Today in the framework of COVID-19, the community needs help with food, medicines and biosafety tools. Likewise, children need technological strategies so that their education can continue.
With this campaign we will bring to the community food for the children's canteen, biosafety elements, and technological tools to support education for children and youth.
Our contact person on the island is Laura Sanclemente ([email redacted]) She is a community advisor. She has been working with the community and has supported community leaders since 2008. She lived on the island in 2012 and wrote her master's thesis on the community https://repositorio.flacsoandes.edu.ec/bitstream/10469/7732/7/TFLACSO-2015LASQ.pdf Since then she has been working closely with leaders supporting them in different projects.
