In Loving Memory of Isla Carolina

With the permission of baby Isla's parents, this GoFundMe has been created to help support the expenses related to the unexpected loss of Isla Carolina Merino Ortega such as: travel (to return Isla's ashes to be with her grandmother and great-grandmother in Mexico), bereavement and other living expenses as her family grieves.

"Isla is survived by her loving parents, Alberto Merino Ortega and Jessica Burke-Trebell who held her in their hearts from the moment they knew of her existence. While we grieve the loss of the life we imagined for Isla, we find solace in knowing she is now cradled in the arms of angels, forever at peace. Though she never took a breath in this world, Isla will forever remain a cherished member of our family. May her memory be a blessing and may she forever rest in peace." - Obituary

Isla's father is new to Canada and his work visa application is pending approval. He is unable to work until the visa is approved. Isla's mother has been on maternity leave with reduced pay.

During this difficult time, we hope that the community of friends, family and even strangers can band to together to help ease the financial burden for Isla's family as they grieve and mourn her loss.

Beto and Jess both have the kindest and biggest hearts. People who know Jess, know that she is always trying to find ways to help people and better their lives in some way - without being prompted. Her intentions and her heart are always in the right place. Helping the community, making people happy even at her own expense. That's just the type of person she is - full of compassion and empathy for others.

On a personal note, I have known Jess for 10 years through our advocacy work and shared connection to child welfare. Some of you connected to child welfare might recognize her face or name because she has contributed so much to give back and to raise awareness to the challenges youth in and from care face. Sharing her own personal lived experiences and connecting with other youth.

Jess and Beto have not been dealt the best of cards in life. It hasn't been easy to say the least. The last funeral I attended was about 5 years ago for Jess's mother...Not everyone has an extensive family tree or even know the full picture of their family history. Simply put, immediate family support is very, very limited. I hope we can show Jess and Beto that they have an extended community who care for them during this extremely difficult time. Whether it's a donation or words of love/comfort, your support is appreciated.

My heart aches thinking of the unimaginable pain and sorrow they must be experiencing. Watching your baby grow for 40 weeks...the emotional and physical pain of going through pregnancy, delivery and the loss of your child...

No amount of money could make them whole but at least we can try to ease their financial burden.
