Isis Muniz Domestic Abuse Legal Battle
On Saturday, August 7th 2021, Isis Muniz was the victim of violent domestic abuse in her hotel room in Nevada. The assault has left Isis with a broken nose and cut lip that will require surgeries, a serious concussion, a hole in her eardrum, abdominal pain, and bruises and cuts all over her body. Her attacker currently roams free, and she is afraid for her life.
As a young woman who recently immigrated to Canada alone, Isis has faced serious resistance in her legal battle. The police and criminal justice systems have done little to help. The assault took place outside of Canada, meaning that Isis must navigate complex legal systems in both Canada and the United States.
Unwilling to become another statistic, Isis is fighting for her story to be heard in court. Isis was hesitant to accept a GoFundMe, however bringing a domestic abuser to justice costs a lot of money. She needs financial support with her medical and legal bills.
Since Saturday, Isis has already spent over $12,500CAD. This money has gone towards lawyers ($6300), medical bills ($1300), getting back to Canada after the assault ($800), and heightened security measures ($4,100) so her attacker cannot find her and harm her again. At Isis' request, I have uploaded photos of a few of these bills below for full transparency.
The goal for this fundraiser is $40,000CAD. All of this money will go towards Isis’ safety and bringing her abuser to justice -- medical bills, legal fees, and personal safety measures. Any money raised beyond the cost of her legal/medical bills and personal safety during this time will be donated to the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre of Women’s College Hospital.
