"ISIAIBO BENXOATI" - HEALING THE SICK, SAVING LIVES
COVID-19 is devastating communities across the Amazon basin including the Shipibo-Konibo, living in the Ucyali region of Peru.
Indigenous communities are some of the most vulernable people out there when it comes to pandemics. Living at the frontlines of corporate extraction, marginalized and forgotten by the government (including healthcare and sanitation services), it is up to the global community to show our appreciation and support for their role as forest defenders.
Communities are facing a number of issues including:
- Food and medicine shortage
- Lack of access to healthcare
- Lack of access to sanitation services
- Inability to generate income due to federal lockdown
Lead by the young lawyer Demer Vasquez, this initiative is working to bring medication and food to four native communities living near the outskirts of the city Pucallpa:
- Nueva Era (population est. 200)
- Jhon Jockie (~100)
- Bena Jema (~100)
- Victoria Garcia (~100)
AND five additional riverine communities living far away from cities (which require additional funds for transportation, to support):
- San Salvador (population est. 100)
- Santa Clara (~80)
- Nuevo Saposoa (~150)
- Alva Castro (~50)
- Santa Elisa (~100)
***
Demer and his team will work to bring supplies to approximately 480 Shipibo-Konibo peoples severely impacted by COVID-19 who need EMERGENCY SUPPORT.
We will be supplying medication and supplies including:
- Paracetamol
- Rubbing alcohol
- Antibiotics
- Gloves
- Masks
- O2 tanks
...and food/kitchen supplies including:
- Rice
- Pastas
- Sugar
- Fish
- Oils
- Soaps
- Detergents
- Oats
- Wheat
***
Perhaps worse than the direct impact of COVID-19 are the severe lockdown restrictions and the impacts they've had on people's ability to access basic resources they need. Demer is been on the ground and observing pockets of communities who are particularly impacted, and is committed to supporting them first.
If you've been touched by the healing traditions of the Amazon basin, or even understand the importance of the Amazon rainforest from a ecological perspective, please reflect your gratitude in a donation.
