Isabella’s medical costs

Hi, my name is Mikayla! My daughter, Isabella, is epileptic, autistic, has a gene mutation, and global developmental delay. She has had epilepsy since 3 days shy of 5 months old. She is now 2.5 years old. She is currently going through Children’s hospital Colorado for her neurology needs but she is not getting the care that she deserves and needs there. Her neurologist and hospital staff are very rude, they don’t take her situation seriously, don’t take into consideration what my husband and I say. She has been seen by the only 2 pediatric epileptologists in the state of Colorado. One at Childrens hospital in Colorado Springs and one at Childrens Hospital in Aurora. Every time we need an appt they either can’t get us in or it’s months and months before she sees her. If she’s seizing a lot they admit her and then give her a bunch of meds to stop the seizure and then sends her home instead of keeping an eye on her in the hospital for a few days. Because of that her seizures have gotten worse.

So with all that being said, we have decided to transfer her neurology services to Phoenix Childrens hospital in Phoenix AZ. Her appointment is at 1pm on March 17, 2023 and will be needing a sleep deprived EEG at 10am that morning. They have made her an appointment with one of the best pediatric epileptologists in Arizona. He’s so good that he has even developed his own type of epilepsy surgery and takes miles long road trips in different countries to educate people on epilepsy. They got us in on the spot and had lots of openings which means his schedule is open months and months in advance.

Colorado Medicaid won’t cover services outside of Colorado unless she ends up in the emergency room and gets admitted to the hospital. I’ve been on the phone with a bunch of insurance companies who all say since she’s on Medicaid they cannot get her on any other insurance because you are not allowed to have double insurance in Colorado. Because of that, we have to pay for everything out of pocket which includes appointment cost, tests, procedures, blood draw, EEG, MRI, etc. We need all the help we can get, it’s very emergent that she gets these services.
