So I have found myself in a position that I never anticipated, needing to rely on others to help me with the care of my four legged family member, Isabella. As difficult as it is to swallow my pride and reach out to others, I am very grateful for this format to exist. Having said that, if you are unable to provide a financial contribution, I will ask you to say a prayer for her.
Dr. Passmore - one of Isabella's two amazing Dr's
Isabella is Tibetan Spanial, a rescue, her age is somewhat of an unknown. When Isabella came into my life, it was evident that she had somewhat of a turbulent past. Isabella arrived into my arms with much hesitation, skepticism towards not only myself, but most especially others. I have now had her going on three years. Over the time I have had her, she has become more and more trusting and has displayed in small ways, a peaked interest in others who are in my life day to day. My friends. It has been a long awaited for blossoming and it has been so rewarding to fianlly see her expanding her love towards more and more people.
Moving along to the big question, what happened? Monday afternoon, Isabella and I had plans to spend the day with friends. We began our day over lunch, Isabella tethered to the bench we were sitting. Unfortunately, the beautiful afternoon came to an abrupt halt when a large dog walked a bit too close and spooked Isabella. In an instant, she ran for the dog, the slack of the leash ended and pulled Isabella quickly to the ground. The next thing we knew she was yelping and showing no movement in either hind leg. The local vet, directed us to The Animal Neurology & Imaging Center, where an emergency MRI was performed, and the problem understood by the vet Dr. Scott Schatzberg. Isabella had a compacted, slipped and ruptured disc. After an extensive explanation of what the options were, prognosis of outcomes... a very difficult decision had to be made.
I hold a position of employment that is in retail, lead a rather simple life, holding gratitude for the blessings I have in my life, Isabella at the top of that list. With this decision, I knew the financial cost would far exceed my ability to pay without lowering my pride and both asking and accepting help from others. Despite the difficulty of knowing I would need to ask for help... I reflected on my four legged family member, what she has been through, how far she has come and knew in an instant, I could not allow this to be her end, and that whatever the cost, it would prove to be the best money spent, Isabella needed and deserved for her life to be given another opportunity.
The emergency surgery occurred that evening, taking 3 hours time. The good news is that Isabella made it through the surgery, now we are in a waiting period to see if she regains feeling and movement in her rear legs. We are only just past 24 hours since the surgery, we have been told that it may take a few days or it could be much longer before we know conclusively. Isabella will be at the hospital for an indefinite period of time as of now and needing rehabilitation therapy once she is able to return home. The best outcome of course will be that she regains the ability to walk again, if not, she will have to be fitted for a cart.
I will continue to post updates as we go day to day.
I want nothing more than for Isabella to enjoy her life, to continue to gain trust in humans, she deserves nothing short of this. I will thank each of you in advance, for anything you are able to contribute, be it financial or your prayers for Isabella. Isabella thanks you too.
