Celebrating Isaac & Beau
Donation protected
Our twins Isaac & Beau surprised us all by arriving three months early in October 2015. Being extremely premature meant they needed intensive care for the first two months of their lives (and a further one month of special care), without which they would not have survived. In celebration of their first birthday we are raising funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Royal Hospital for Women Sydney.
During their time in the NICU, Beau & Isaac needed mechanical ventilation to breathe, then steadily progressed using various forms of breathing support (NAVA ventilator, CPAP, high flow and low flow) before they could breathe on their own. They both lived in a humidicrib, had blood transfusions, were fed via IV tube and NG tube, had phototherapy and as much kangaroo care as possible. All of this was considered quite 'normal' in the range of treatments conducted in the NICU (but not very normal for us!).
More than 70% of the equipment in the NICU, even at this being a public hospital, is funded by private donations. If it wasn't for this equipment it is highly unlikely that Isaac & Beau would have survived.
