Irvington Teams Advance to Global STEM Competition

Donation protected
Two teams, The Building Bulldogs 2.0 and The Sassy Spectacular Seven, each comprising seven 5th graders from Main Street School in Irvington, NY, earned 1st place at the Destination Imagination  (DI) State Tournament in Binghamton, NY. They are advancing to Global Finals, where they'll compete against the best DI teams in the world and take part in fun, educational, and enriching activities, and connect with many other students. Global Finals will take place on May 22-25 in Kansas City, MO.

Attending Global Finals is expensive, so we are asking family, friends, and the community at large for help defraying the costs of sending these 14 bright students to this amazing event. Any donation, no matter how small, goes a long way.

We are working with agencies and our school district to help defray the costs. However, we have been advised that funds are limited if there are any at all.

Our local news station ran a short story on the achievement:

DESTINATION IMAGINATION is an educational program that helps students learn valuable skills like creative and critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork, through different STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) challenges.

THE BUILDING BULLDOGS 2.0 are taking part in the Engineering Challenge, "Monster Effects". The team developed an educational play about little kids overcoming their fears as they go to sleep at night. They designed their own costumes, created props, wrote the script, and used lights to show cause and effect on how the brain is affected by fear. The team is managed by Simone Handfield.

THE SASSY SPECTACULAR SEVEN are taking part in the Project Outreach Challenge, "Escape Artists". The team organized a Pet Week at their school raising awareness of responsible pet ownership. They then produced a live 8-minute presentation that showcased their community project using a suspenseful futuristic story of pets escaping their abusive owners.  The team is managed by Shiran Pasternak and Nancy Silverman.

The estimated cost for each of the two teams (7 students) is:

Entry Fee = $5,500
Travel = $400 * 7 students = $2,800
Hotel = $80 * 4 nights * 7 students = $2,240
Food = $36 * 4 days * 7 students  = $1,008
Total per team = $11,548
Total for both teams = $23,096
