Ironman for Myanmar

On Sunday 4th July I am taking part in Bolton Ironman which comprises a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) cycle and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run. When I signed up a year ago I neither owned a bike nor could swim more than 3 strokes of freestyle without thinking I might drown. Getting to the start line has been the toughest challenge I have embarked on & completing it will have made it all worth it.

Despite all my best efforts there is a real chance I will not be quick enough to beat the cut off times, but I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got to raise money for people suffering in Myanmar.

Myanmar was our home for nearly 4 years and changed our lives forever. Like many people I have been deeply saddened by the recent events. The Yangon Neighbourhood Network (YNN) was initiated during the first wave of COVID-19 by Doh Eain to aid the distribution of urgent support to vulnerable people.

The events of February 2021 saw a lot of upheaval, and Myanmar people are facing increased suffering. Based on the work done so far, YNN has all the infrastructure in place to directly reach and support people with (mobile) cash and food.

YNN's achievements March 2020 - Present

• Distributed 90,060,000mmk ($55,000) to 3642 households via unconditional digital cash transfers ranging from 5,000-30,000mmk.

• Delivered meals, and food packages to over 7600 people across Yangon.

• Provided basic counselling training to 20 YNN to improve MHPSS support for communities. Delivered 3 trainings; digital safety, logistics & reporting, nutrition.

• Completed 3 needs assessment: a snapshot of basic needs assessment, a survey of over PWD 276 community members, and an indepth look at MHPSS needs and opportunities.

• Distributed 20 hand washing stations, 7700 litres of hand sanitizer, 80 bars of soap and 21,650 facemasks.

I was overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity when I last raised money for Myanmar causes. I know it has been a tough year for many but the people of Myanmar have had it tougher than most.  I am incredibly grateful for anything you can spare.
