Ironman for Lupus UK & Friends of Anchor

After the Ironman in 2019 I said never again….
That remained my intention for many months until the at the beginning of 2020 one of my closest friends signed up for Ironman Copenhagen taking place that August as he was fundraising for Friends of Anchor who cared for his wife during her successful battle with cancer. He relentlessly hounded me to join him on the start line and I eventually succumbed, but on one strict proviso – that we would also raise money for Lupus UK, to help those with the horrible disease my late mother had throughout most of her adult life.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease for which there is no cure. It is most commonly diagnosed between age 15 to 44 and 90% of patients are women. The disease results in your immune system mistakenly attacking healthy parts of your body. It's still not fully understood why this happens. Common symptoms of lupus include joint pain, extreme tiredness and a rash on your face. Lupus can also cause serious kidney damage, and kidney failure is one of the leading causes of death among people with lupus.
The charity Lupus UK aims to empower people with the disease by providing information about lupus and offering support, so their voices are heard and their condition diagnosed and managed effectively. Our family can certainly vouch for this after the support we received from them. Funding is also provided for research into bold initiatives such as stem cell transplants to try and beat the disease.
Our race didn’t happen in August last year but all indications are that we are going to be on the start line in a couple of months. If there are issues with Copenhagen then we have committed to going the distance at an alternative venue this summer, either at a race or on our own.
Now knowing first-hand how tough this day will be I’m making every training session count and will be as ready as I can for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and marathon run.
Any sponsorship would be gratefully received. Both Lupus UK and Friends of Anchor are very close to home for me and it will mean a lot to be able to support these charities.
