Ironman for an Ironman - Tom Stevenson

For those who know me well, for the last twelve months I have dedicated myself wholeheartedly to train for the Ironman UK which is in 4 weeks time ‪on Sunday 14th July.

Consequently I have made the decision to race it for a dear friend of mine and brother from another mother, Tom Stevenson.

....For those of you who don’t know Tom, let me share with you his story.

Six years ago Tom was a recruitment consultant at PSR just like myself, when he began to get strange twitches in his thumb.

After going to the doctors and having numerous tests, he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease, also known as ALS, or more commonly known as the disease that Stephen Hawking suffered with.

As you can imagine, on this day his life was turned upside down. He asked about his home. They replied get a bungalow. He asked about the success stories and was told “don’t get your hopes up you’ll be lucky”. And most importantly, he asked about starting a family and was horrified when they told him ‘best not to because you won’t see them grow up’. He refused to believe the arrogant words said to him, and today, 6 years down the line he and his wife are waiting to welcome their second child into their loving family!! All whilst holding down a job at PSR even though he was advised to quit and and do the things he had always dreamed of. If this doesn’t inspire you I don’t know what will!!

He is always finding new ways to adapt and overcome this adversity, he comes up with entrepreneurial ways to raise money for his family whilst also increasing awareness for the disease and helping others that are suffering alongside him. Tom continues to come into work everyday with a smile on his face, so when you’re having a bad day and you run out of staples for your stapler, all you have to do is think about Tom and it puts your life into perspective for you!

He is a true inspiration to me and everybody around him, do I feel sorry for him? No, because he doesn’t feel sorry for himself. He gets up every day and battles this disease like a man possessed. So the least I can do is dedicate myself to this challenge and complete it for Tom.

I’m asking people to donate kindly and generously because although I’m putting myself through this grueling task (even by my standards) it’s nothing in comparison to what Tom endures each and every day and believe me it’s not getting any easier for him.

Any money raised will go towards his medication, house alterations, mobility and little things to make his life as smooth as possible.

So ‪on the 14th July 2019, I will be swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles with over 8000ft of climbing and as a cool down simply running a marathon, 26.2 miles all whilst aiming to do this in under 12 hours.

We need inspirational people like this in the world so this is for you Tom, keep doing what you’re doing brother.
