IronCrew - Supporting Matt Penny and Family

This is a fundraiser for Sam Penny and Matt and Sam’s little daughter Freya.
Just over a year ago Matt received the devastating news that he had Stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer which had also spread to his liver. With a little daughter on her way and newly engaged, it’s the news every person dreads.
Very sadly Matt passed away on the 20th of February 2019. It has been an incredibly challenging time for all, and we want to do everything that we can to support Sam and Freya. The decision had been made to cease treatment and Matt moved to the Manly Waters Hospital where he could spend time with his family and friends in comfort. On the evening of the 20th, Matt was with his wife, Sam - they’d shared a beautiful evening, eating his mum's favourite home-made Shepherd’s Pie, had a walk to the balcony overlooking the harbour, and looked through photos of when Freya was tiny. He was in Sam’s arms when he passed.
Matt will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Matt always had a big smile for everyone. He was a loving, caring dad and husband. He was a mate who enjoyed chatting about the challenges of his football club, Fulham, surfing, playing sport, adventuring and challenging himself constantly. He is a man none of us will forget. We will always love you Matt.
About Matt
For those of you that knew Matt, you will know that he was a warrior. He’s the man who still ran on the footie pitch whilst everyone else was exhausted. He’s the chap who breezed through triathlons like they were just a walk in the park. There are also very few people in the world who have completed an IronMan.. but Matt is one of them. It’s only fitting then, that we attempt one of his greatest achievements - the IronMan challenge!
The Challenge
None of us within his Australia family are fit enough to take on one leg of the IronMan, let alone the whole thing. So, we are going to try and replicate Matt’s achievement in a mega IronMan relay in Sydney.
An IronMan consists of a:
- 3.86 km Swim
- 180.25 km Bike
- 42.2 km Run
Matt completed this in 11 hours 47 minutes - our aim is to beat this time!
We will have a small team who will work to complete each element of the IronMan distances, starting with the swim, then the bike then the run. This will take place on Saturday the 9th of March 2019 in Sydney. We will also be competing against a UK team “Squirrels Tri Club”.. we wish them all the best... but GO THE AUSSIES!!

We really appreciate every donation, however small or large and all proceeds go directly to Sam and Freya. For Sam, this will enable her to get through this next period of grief and help her get back on her feet and also help provide for little Freya.
