John White (63), originally from Clonmel, is an Irish national living in Dubai. As a result of the global economic crash in 2007, John’s construction business in the United Arab Emirates suffered greatly. This initiated a series of adverse events with John, whose failure to make payments to suppliers because of failure of his clients to pay him resulted in a civil case being taken against him, as per UAE law. Consequently, John was incarcerated in extreme, inhumane circumstances in Al Wathba prison in the desert between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, for 4.5 years. As a result, John has been declared bankrupt and has not been able to contribute to his family’s finances, who live in Ireland and whom he has not seen in 7 years, since.
After being released from prison in August 2017, the courts retained John’s passport. UAE law decries that one must pay all debts before leaving the country. Thus, while released from prison, John is also now again incarcerated in society as without his identification he cannot look for work to support himself, his family and to facilitate his debts. John has had to rely on the decency of family and especially friends, many of whom have been so supportive to him through this experience and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. With all this stress enveloping him, John suffered a stroke in April 2018. With no finances he cannot receive the urgent medical post stroke treatment that is required. His quality of life and mental health have suffered profoundly.
We, his family, are issuing this appeal and have set up a GoFundMe account for John. We hope to raise enough money for him to get treatment initiated and a programme set for his rehabilitation. We would greatly appreciate any help you can offer John and your generosity will not go unnoticed.
Thank You.
