Ireland to Mongolia for Charity

In the summer of 2021, during another COVID lockdown, we (Craig and Laura) were on the hunt for adventure. That's when we came across the crazy adventure called The Mongol Rally. The premise of the Mongol Rally is simple, one tiny, barely working car, a team of degenerates have to make it 10,000 miles to Mongolia with no help, no route and no plan. Sounds great, right?
At the time of finding out about the rally, we were a team of two. We decided that misery loves company so we put out a call on Facebook to see if anyone wanted to join us. No one answered. We were doomed to this route as one married couple. In a fit of desperation, we put out one more call. Enter Sean and Shannon, the final two degenerates needed to complete our team. After a very serious Discord call, telling our new potential teammates all the possible dangers and ways we could die on the Mongol Rally, they were crazy enough to say yes. We signed up for the rally the next day.
Now, we had our team of degenerates; now, we needed the fifth and final member of our team - our trusty steed. Many a day were spent trawling the ads of DoneDeal to no avail. Then, several months later, by happy accident, we stumbled across her. It was love at first sight. We drove to Portlaoise to pick her up, and from then on, Mercedes, the trusty 1999 1L Nissan Micra, was our Mongolian steed. She will be taking us through some of the most remote and treacherous parts of Europe and South West/Central Asia.
And now, here we are, finally raising money for our chosen charities:
Cool Earth
Cool Earth is the official charity of the Mongol Rally. Cool Earth exists because right now, the world is in a climate crisis. The most effective way to fight back is to protect the best carbon-storing technology that already exists: rainforest. And the best way to do that? Back, support and listen to the people living there.
Indigenous peoples and local communities have lived in balance with rainforest for thousands of years and are the real rainforest experts.
Cool Earth exists to give cash direct to rainforest communities, to fund projects that create choice, tackle the root causes of deforestation. and protect vital carbon sinks.
The Irish Cancer Society
The Irish Cancer Society is one of our own personal charity choices. The Irish Cancer Society are a community of patients, survivors, volunteers, supporters, health and social care professionals and researchers. Together they are transforming the experiences and outcomes of people affected by cancer through our advocacy, support services and research.
The Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Center
The Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Center is our final personal charity choice. The Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre was established in 1992 to provide a professional, confidential and free counselling service to all survivors of Rape, Incest, Child Sexual Abuse, Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment and All Forms of Sexual Violence.
They believe that survivors of sexual violence and abuse have the right to be treated with respect and sensitivity. They aim to provide a place of help and healing for survivors of rape & sexual abuse by offering care and support in a confidential environment.
