Hi, my name is Shanna Collins, and I’m proud to be a first-generation high school graduate and now college student attending Southern University, where I’m majoring in Criminal Justice and performing as a member of the world-famous Human Jukebox Marching Band.

I come from a community where many people with incredible potential never get the chance to further their education—not because they don’t want it, but because they don’t have the support or resources. I was determined to break that cycle. With faith, discipline, and perseverance, I made it to college. But what many don’t see is the reality behind the scenes: since the day I arrived, I’ve been completely on my own.

No safety net. No financial help. Just me, figuring out how to pay for my dorm, stay fed, and afford basic life essentials—all while balancing full-time classes and the intensity of marching band life.

If I had known how hard it would be, maybe I would’ve just not went. But I’m so glad I did. Southern has shown me that I belong here. Being surrounded by driven students and the energy of the Human Jukebox has helped me realize I deserve to be here—and I’m not giving up.

I successfully paid off my entire freshman year on my own. I’ve already raised half of my sophomore year’s costs, and any contributions made will be used towards finishing paying for that. This isn’t something I plan to do every year. In 2026, I plan to enlist in the military and go reserved, a goal I’ve held for years—especially after completing four years of JROTC in high school. I just didn’t expect to be taking this journey so soon.

Regardless, I’m committed to graduating, to giving back, and to becoming someone who inspires and uplifts others—especially young people from communities like mine who feel like college is out of reach.
