Invest in Love's Summer Pre-College Exploration
Donation protected
My name is Love Anker and I am a junior at Jeffersonville High School in Jeffersonville, Indiana. I have been selected to attend two prestigious summer pre-college programs. One is the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) at American University on Forensic Science, and the second is at Brown University on Cancer Biology. Both prestigious programs select outstanding high school students from around the world to participate based on academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and demonstrated leadership potential. It is an honor to be able to attend both the NSLC and Brown University, and I am extremely excited about these opportunities. I am writing to request your financial support, which will enable me to attend both programs.
About Love
I am a member of the Jeffersonville High School Choir and recently won gold place in a solo and ensemble to advance to the state competition for ISSMA in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 18, 2023. I volunteer ten hours a month for the American Red Cross and am a member of the National Honor Society for my school. I am currently enrolled in five college courses, while maintaining a 4.18 G.P.A. I anticipate earning 30 college credits upon graduation from high school. My career interests are to be a forensic pathologist or genealogist. In my spare time, I enjoy playing my ukulele and tickling with my pet dog, Sammie, and two geese, Periwinkle Peeve and Amaranth.
NSLC at American University in Washington, DC
At the NSLC, I will have the opportunity to participate in leadership development workshops where I will develop skills including effective communication, public speaking, and conflict resolution for nine days. In addition, I will participate in lectures and workshops that will give me a better understanding of forensic science and will prepare me for college. I will attend briefings and participate in forum discussions led by National and World leaders in my chosen field. In recent years, NSLC students have met with Special Agent Robert Fram, the Scientific Analysis Section Chief of the FBI Laboratory; Dr. Robert A. Mitchell Jr., Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C.; Supreme Court Justices Anthony Kennedy and retired Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and David Souter; as well as many Senators, Representatives, and Ambassadors.
Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island
At Brown, I will gain a true sense of the American college experience. I’ll be responsible for getting myself to and from classes while also choosing from a wide variety of out-of-classroom activities. These activities and events include everything from college success workshops to student organizations and social programs, giving me the opportunity to further explore my interests and also try new things while interacting with peers from around the world. Most importantly, I will be taking a three-week course in Cancer Biology, which includes traditional lectures with a focus on active learning, small group discussions, and laboratory exercises. I will spend approximately 1.5 hours per class in the laboratory learning techniques used in the diagnosis, molecular characterization, and treatment of human cancer.
Why Attend 2 Summer Pre-College Programs?
It is important for me to attend both NSLC and Brown so that I can:
1. Explore new interests and hone current passions to help me choose the right major in college and best pathway for medical school.
2. Learn valuable skills in potential career fields of interest
3. Meet like-minded peers
4. Make real-life connections and learn how to network
5. Spending four weeks on two college campuses is good practice for the real deal
The cost for me to attend both programs will be $15,109. This includes the programs, rooms and board, course materials, program activities, travel to the programs and money for other incidental expenses. Unfortunately, my family cannot afford the entire amount; therefore, I am requesting your assistance. So far, I have raised $5,109, but I still need to raise an additional $10,000. My fundraising deadline is May 1, 2023.
Your financial support in any amount will make a big difference in helping me attend the NSLC and Brown. To learn more about the NSLC please visit www.nslcleaders.org, and visit Brown Pre-College Program at brown.precollege.edu.
P.S.
Your donation will benefit me, Love! Dr. Cicely Cottrell is my aunt, who helped me organize this fundraiser.
With eagerness and sincerity,
Love Anker
